Not even completely finished when it was attacked by the British in 1776, the American military outpost now contained within Fort Moultrie National Monument still managed to repel the first British onslaught against its walls. Eventually captured after a long siege, the fort aged poorly and was rebuilt after the war between 1798 and 1809, with later renovations happening all the way through World War II. Visitors to the fort can see it in its restored condition, with different areas reflecting different parts of its history. Exhibits scattered around the fort help provide further information about various events and building techniques, and the visitor center also offers a variety of museum exhibits and a 20-minute introductory film. The fort is on the western tip of Sullivan's Island, within eyesight of Fort Sumter National Monument.
